Citizenship
Gaining American citizenship is the dream of many immigrants in the United States. Gaining citizenship allows a person to participate fully in American society, obtain the right to vote, and acquire a U.S. passport. Becoming an American citizen also allows that person to petition their family members, such as their parents and children, much faster. It provides the ultimate safety and comfort in the United States. Permanent Residency
Permanent residency, also known as having a green card allows a person to stay indefinitely in the United States. A person with permanent residency is able to legally work inside the United States and travel internationally. There are many ways to gain permanent residency, however it is generally obtained by being petitioned by a family member or a business entity. After one becomes a permanent resident, they can apply for U.S. citizenship after three to five years.
Asylum
An affirmative asylum application is a step taken by a person who has recently entered the United States and is afraid to return to their country for fear of personal harm. United States asylum law protects those who are were persecuted or threatened in their home country for reasons related to their identity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, race, and many more. If person is eligible for asylum, they can apply for protection in the United States. If approved, the asylum seeker will be provided with legal status and a pathway to residency and Citizenship in the United States.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
DACA is a form of temporary protection that give a DACA recipient a form of legal status in the United States. DACA provides the ability to work and live in the United States with a social security number and relief from the threat of deportation. To qualify for these programs, the individual must have arrived in the United States as a child, have been physically present in the U.S. since January 1, 2010, meet other qualifications regarding school, or be the parent of a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. Consular Processing
Consular Processing allows a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident to petition for close relatives who reside in a foreign country. If the petition for the relative is approved, the relative can receive permanent residency and a pathway to U.S. citizenship. The petitioner can also apply for a close relative who is currently undocumented in the United States.
